The Hanged Man

The Major Arkana card, marked with number twelve.

Card description

The Hangman Tarot Card is marked with the number twelve and refers to the sign of Pisces and the twelfth house of astrology, which is responsible for all that is hidden: secrets, fears and secrets from the past. The card shows a man hanging head down, hands tied behind his back. His foot is tied to a cross beam that resembles the beam of a cross. The man’s other, free leg is bent at a right angle at the knee, which also gives his body the shape of a cross. This shape is associated with sacrifice and suffering. Nevertheless, the face of the hanging head downwards expresses a gentle calm. He seems to be contemplating the sight that appeared to his eyes because of his present situation. Around the hangman’s head shines a luminous nimbus that can symbolize enlightenment. It is not difficult to find symbolism related to early Christianity on the card. It is worth remembering that Saint Peter was crucified upside down at his own request because he did not want the way he would die to be the same as the way Christ died.

Card meaning

The Hangman Tarot Card carries several meanings which may vary depending on the accompanying schedule. First of all, the card speaks of the need to see what has been hidden from us until now. The charter suggests that only by looking at a matter from a completely different perspective can we find a successful solution. It is possible that there is a secret that will come to light after a while. The rope on the Hanged Man’s foot and hand may unfortunately suggest that we have fallen victim to skillful manipulation or that we have been lied to. Our passive attitude and excessive credulity contributed to this. It is also very possible that we ourselves are to blame for our current situation. The card suggests that there is something (or someone) that we have previously turned a blind eye to or that we did not want to notice at all. Perhaps in some situation we were just passive spectators, when our reaction would be a much better solution. The Hangman’s Card in a negative sense speaks of passivity, instability of character, inactivity, stagnation and loss of control. At the same time, it suggests that the difficult situation we are in may contribute to our spiritual growth. This is why the man on the card appears calm and his face radiates a glow.

Another meaning of the Hangman card is voluntary sacrifice in the name of higher values. In this context, this card speaks of a profound internal transformation that will allow you to see the world from a completely different perspective. Contact with our own or others’ suffering allows us to deeply appreciate everyday happiness that we often fail to perceive. Deep voluntary commitment, such as caring for a sick family member, may require a lot of energy and time.

In relation to time, the Hangman’s Card foreshadows delays, downtime and stuck decisions. In such situations, it is worth remembering that not everything depends on us. Sometimes the card speaks of top-down restrictions that we simply have to submit to, whether we feel like it or not.
